Portfolio Page 1 - Initial Letter
I’ll be honest, this year has not started how I expected, or wanted, it to. Having all of my classes online, sports postponed, and many clubs not continuing, this year wasn’t looking too great. A few weeks in and I’ve been met with obstacles, frustration, and stress. Yet, I still believe this year can turn out amazing. After Core Camp and our training with Scott Backovich, we have so many possibilities and opportunities to give back to our student body and community. Core Camp gave me resources of support and creativity. It gave me encouragement and motivation not to give up on this year just yet. Core Camp taught me leadership is not about our activities and dances, but more about supporting and understanding our student body. We need to be there for our students and help them get through this year with us. Our training with Scott Backovich taught me how to keep our activities alive. I learned how to make our social media more interactive, incorporate our community into our activities, but most of all, I learned that our events should be about giving, not asking. We often find ourselves ASKING our student body for things such as their participation or their time. When in reality, we should be taking a step back and GIVING things to our student body. We should be giving our students appreciation and acknowledgement. With these tools I feel like this year is going to be incredibly fun and more successful than we ever imagined. In leadership, we have to stay strong, consistent, and mindful with not only ourselves but also others around us.
Portfolio Page 2 - Favorite Quotes
Hard work beats talent when talent fails to work hard.”- Tim Notke. I absolutely love this quote because it shows that no matter how good you are, if you don’t put in that extra work you will never be the best. This quote keeps me motivated and moving when I’m feeling my worst. I know that as long as I put in that extra mile, I do one more rep, I take one more lap and I am working towards bettering myself in every way. “There's only one way to succeed in anything, and that is to give it everything.” - Vince Lombardi. This quote reminds me to always give everything my best effort. That doesn’t mean just try my best but it means to give it 110% every single time. Good things don’t come easy, between school, sports, and all my other responsibilities, the only way to stand out is to give everything all your effort. “The most beautiful thing you can wear is confidence.” - Blake Lively. Confidence is a huge part of my life, I feel like it is one of the most important concepts in life. Without confidence how can you ever really truly be yourself and feel comfortable. I rely on my confidence for practically everything. By believing in myself and knowing I can accomplish anything I really set my mind to, I am able to play in any game no matter the crowd, perform a ridiculous fake piano concert in front of the entire student body, and give speeches without a tremble. Confidence is key

“If you can’t fly then run, if you can’t run then walk, if you can’t walk then crawl, but whatever you do, you have to keep moving forward.” - Martin Luther King Jr. This quote speaks to me because I feel as if this year has been about perseverance for me. No matter how hard things got, I just had to keep pushing to get through it. Many disappointments, failures, and obstacles were thrown my way this year and I just had to keep moving and looking for the positive. From sports being on and off again, getting quarantined during my first week of games, not hearing back from employers from several jobs, changes and restrictions in events, classes getting harder and harder, and losing some friendships, this year was a make it or break it kind of year. Either I was going to be able to bounce back and recover or I was going to let these difficulties get to me and sink me. I chose to keep moving forward. I now have a job I love, great relationships with the people in my life, my grades are rising, and events I helped put on were successful. I look back at it now and I’m proud of what I went through to get where I am today. I know that no matter what happens, I can get through it as long as I keep moving, maybe it's inch by inch, but any step forward is a step farther than I was before.
Portfolio Page 4 - Goals
My first goal for leadership is to include my class in as many activities and decisions as possible. It has come to my attention that our student body doesn’t feel connected to our leadership class and I believe that is a major problem. I am going to strive to fix that by really listening and taking their concerns, questions, and ideas into major consideration when planning events and creating items for the class. My second goal is to develop my professional life greatly. I will be starting a job soon and college applications come sooner than you realize. Therefore, by really focusing on the professional and putting a lot of time and effort into it I hope to greatly develop those skills. My first short term goal is to prepare my body for the damage it’ll take while playing so many sports in such a short period of time. By eating correctly, and getting into shape I can take some pressure off and prevent any injuries that could occur. I also want to start thinking about playing for colleges. My second short term goal is to make my mind healthy. The most important part of succeeding in life is having a healthy mindset and good mental health. By practicing gratitude each day and taking time to recognize negative emotions I can work towards this goal. My long term goal is to live my life to its fullest extent. I don’t want to look back and regret anything I have done. I want to travel, see the world, meet amazing people, and live my life by my own rules. My second long term goal is to do what I love as a career. I have always been told to do what I love because that’s what you're doing for the rest of your life and I completely agree with that. How can I be motivated to work everyday if I don't love it
Portfolio Page 5 - Goals Part II
My first goal was to involve my class in as many decisions and events as possible. I feel like this was very difficult to do this year considering everything that’s happened. I tried to get my class involved but sometimes they just did not want to participate. It’s hard trying to get a group of students to come together and do something great for our class if it requires additional effort from them. But nonetheless, I will continue to keep trying to get my class involved in school events and activities even if they don’t want to put in that additional effort. As for my professional development, I believe I have achieved that goal and have taken great strides to further my professional life. I currently have a job and I have learned new ways to update my resume and cover letter to make it stand out. I have been to a few interviews and my interviewer always makes comments about my professionalism despite only being 16. I hope to be able to further this part of my life even more in the future with time and experience. My third goal of taking care of my body before starting sports again was not achieved. I kept in good shape but I took advantage of having time off of sports and didn’t rehab my knee correctly. I am not paying for that. My knees are damaged and playing two aggressive sports at the same time is just damaging them more. I try to rehab in my time off but it’s not enough. I need to put more effort into this goal and really focus on taking care of my body in the future before I end my sports career for good. My second short term goal of having a healthy mind has been challenged this year but overall I believe I have been doing pretty good with this goal. With so much on my plate currently I have been able to keep a healthy positive mindset through all the craziness. I’ve really been working on keeping a positive and open mind no matter what is thrown my way and this has really helped me get where I am today. My first long term goal of getting the most out of my life is a work in progress. I work everyday to make sure I live it to the fullest extent and to soak up every ounce of happiness I possibly can. The adventures I’ve gone on this year really contribute to accomplishing this goal but I genuinely will not accomplish this goal until I’m on my deathbed and I’m ok with that. It gives me something to look forward to and work towards everyday. My second long term goal is to love the career I decide to do for the rest of my life. I’ve put research into figuring out what I would really love to do for a living and I think that’s about as much as I can do at this stage of my life. I still have many choices to make when it comes to this goal and a long way to go for sure but any progress is good progress.

Makenzie Loechler is a Sophomore at Ripon Higgh this years and is the Sophomore class president. She is involved in Leadership, three sports, and AP/honor courses. Makenzie works very hard to accomplish her many goals in her life. She hopes to create health in her mind and body through consistency and dedication. Creating health in her mind by mediating and staying in the moment. She will create health in her body by giving her all and eating right. One of Makenzie’s biggest goals for this Leadership year is to involve the class in more decisions about activities the Sophomores plan and put together. She wants everyone to feel included and safe while living out their high school days. Makenzie’s biggest goal in life is to simply live. Not just getting by or living to get through the day, no she wants to experience everything she possibly can. From traveling the world and seeing the seven wonders, to trying new and exotic food, to metting new and interesting people, to making memories she’ll never forget. Makenzie’s top priority is living life to the fullest and finishing the goals she has set to make her grow and be a better person

Portfolio Page 9 - Role Model
My role model is my mom. As cheesy as it sounds, she had taught me many things over the years but especially this year. With me growing up and maturing, I have run into unique obstacles and opportunities for learning. She has taught me patience, self-respect, which battles to fight and which ones to let go, and arguably most important, she has taught me how to be a mature person even when others are acting childish. My mom has shown me that there are times to be professional and civil, times to be childish and fun, and times to hold my ground. I wouldn’t be the person I am today without her. I know I can trust her with anything, she will always have my back, and she can help me through any problem I can’t figure out on my own. She has most definitely affected my life in a positive light and although we may have our ups downs, I know my mom will always be there for me.
Portfolio Page 10 - Spirit Animal
I like to think my spirit animal is a butterfly. There's a few reasons why starting with my mom always says whatever animal you seem to see more often and out of the ordinary is your spirit animal. I always happen to see butterflies everywhere I go. On top of that, butterflies go through large changes in their life, they start as a caterpillar and grow into a beautiful, intricate butterfly. They symbolize change and happiness. I personally believe that butterflies have a sense of inner calmness and are free spirits. They go wherever the wind takes them and brings happiness wherever they go. I strive to be this butterfly. I am constantly trying to better myself and grow into a better version of myself. I have already gone through many changes on the journey to trying to figure out who I want to be and what kind of person I want to be to others. I have learned so far that I am who I am and I don’t need to be any “type” of person. I’m sure I will continue to learn and change as I grow and mature. I like to go with the flow and adapt to whatever situation I get myself into. If a challenge arises, I find a way around it and change as things around me change. If there's anything I want to do in life, it's to make a positive impact on others. To bring happiness to others lives because I know how much it means when a stranger makes me smile.
Portfolio Page 11 - The Season of Giving
For my final I chose to donate a $25 Target gift card to Jaydin’s grandma to help with her Homeless Shelter project. I chose this because I wanted to make a personal connection to who I was giving help. Since I know Jaydin, it felt amazing to be able to help and give back to a cause that both her and her grandma strongly support. I also chose this because giving back to the homeless who arguably have it the toughest during the holiday season was something I really looked forward to doing. I went about doing this assignment by first asking Jaydin the exact details and what I should do to be able to support them and this cause. From there I went out, bought the gift card, and drove it over to Jaydin’s house to drop it off. Then I reflected on the experience by writing this final! The emotional impact was great, it made me feel all warm and happy inside knowing I just helped to make someone’s life a little better during the holiday season. This assignment will always be valuable to me. It’s genuinely not about how much you spend or what you get but the thought and intentions behind Christmas. Whether it's decorating a tree, buying a gift for a friend, or supporting charities like this one, the idea and thought behind actions of people during Christmas will always be valuable and mean the most to me. The best gift isn’t the biggest one, nor the most expensive one, but instead the one that means the most.
Portfolio Page 12 - The Best Things About Me
Picture 1: This picture represents my love for those close to me and my friends. Life wouldn’t be the same without them, it would be dull, boring, and miserable. My friends make my life so much better than I could ever imagine. I genuinely would not be where I am today without them. They never fail to make me laugh when I want to cry, and always make sure to smack me if I ever do something dumb. They are the most supportive and amazing people and I hope to have them in my life for a long while.
Picture 2: Sports have always been a huge part of my life and no matter how terrible the pictures are, I always enjoy looking back at them and remembering the games, players, and special memories with that team. Basketball and volleyball have done so much to shape my life and keep me healthy. Between the players, teams, and coaches I have grown into a better athlete, person, and leader everyday since I started playing. The opportunities offered to me because of the hardwork and effort put in by not only myself but also my coaches is more than anything I would ever expect. I'm so thankful for every game, practice, and opportunity to play because I never know when it could be my last. I don’t know where I would be without sports.
Picture 3: I had no clue what I was walking into when I filled out that application to be a Freshman Representative almost 2 years ago. This program has changed me in so many ways. From developing my professional life to diving deeper into the self and spirituality, my activities director, Morty has taught me more than she knows. I have this program to thank for many of my accomplishments as I wouldn’t even know where to begin without it. This program will help me achieve my future professional goals along with opening so many doors for my future. The amount of opportunities this program offers is endless.
Picture 4: This may seem like an odd picture at first glance but I believe this represents a very important side to me. The moon, stars, sun, galaxies, the cosmos in general are some things I’m very interested in. I feel drawn to the moon and stars especially and maybe it’s because I really enjoy constellations and astrology or maybe it's because the universe keeps me up at night, but I find myself awake at night usually gazing off into the universe and sky. This also happens during the daytime with the sun. I could spend hours laying out in the sun, soaking up the warmth and sunlight, just simply being.
Picture 5: In relation to picture 4, picture 5 represents my love for nature. Rivers, oceans, forests, and plants are some of my favorite things. I could sit outside in a forest or near an ocean for hours just listening to the sounds and thinking. I often use this as a way of getting away from the real world for a minute, I bring a nice playlist and I just sit outside in the sun looking at the nature around me. It's a type of free therapy I wish more people would be able to use. I feel more connected to myself and the energy around me when I’m alone in nature. Eventually I have to come back to earth and resume my responsibilities but for a small minute in time, it feels as if everything is at peace.

Portfolio Page 13 - Why I like Being A Member of Leadership
This year has been a rollercoaster for sure, with ups and downs, proud accomplishments and disappointments, but all around I have learned more about myself this year than ever before. Leadership has always been a program of growth and development, I seem to learn more and more about myself and those around me every class period. This year has been no different but with a slight twist. Typically in this program we focus on what we can do for others and although that was still a main goal, with covid and limited activities, we focused on how to better ourselves, better our program, and provide support for our student body. This has pushed me to become more creative, resilient, and flexible when it comes to handing the student body and creating events with what we had to work with. The amount of personal growth I’ve seen within myself in the past year is tremendous. Between learning how to live in the moment and just being, diving deeper into what I really want in life and how to achieve it, I’ve pushed myself to be confident with who I am and how people see me. In addition, I’ve learned how to be a more open minded person, our book study this year has opened my eyes to a whole new world of patience and understanding. Besides personal development, this program has given me the opportunity to dive deeper into what I want to do with my future professional life. I’ve spent more time researching, learning, and understanding different career paths in my free time to see what really interests me. With COVID and restrictions on events, I believe we all had to think a little harder and become a little more creative when it came to planning events. Participation, publicity, and even the event itself may not have gone as well as we wanted but the fact that our program was able to plan, prepare, publicize, and execute an entire event during a pandemic while staying safe and not spreading the disease is an amazing feat in itself. I am proud of what we accomplished this year and I am even more proud to be able to call myself a part of that program. This program has given me so much but the best part about this program is the memories we make, what we provide for our student body, and how we all push ourselves to be the best version of ourselves. I’m glad I applied to this program last year, I hope to be able to continue my journey in this program and continue growing professionally and personally.
Portfolio Page 14 - Homecoming Gallery
My favorite updated component about Homecoming was how we adapted our night rally. At the amphitheater I felt the rally was more personal and more focused on the class. With the stage it felt like the dances were more important and watching the candidate dances up there was so much fun. I’m hoping we’re able to continue doing the night rally on the amphitheater!
Portfolio Page 15 - What I Love To Do
Sports. Any sports, all sports, I’m an athlete at heart. This year my favorite hobby was taken away from me for most of the year. The thing I spent most of my time training, practicing, rehabbing, and building was taken away so simply. Yet, I now have my favorite hobby back and in full force might I add. I’m used to playing one sport a season, one sport to really focus on and get those muscles conditioned to use, one sport to really, fully play. This year, thanks to covid, I was given two sports at the same time with very very short seasons, which is a blessing and a curse. I love volleyball and basketball but both sports take a toll on my already damaged body and typically that’s not a problem, but unfortunately this year, playing both sports so quickly has really strained my body. Yet, I keep playing. As the title suggests, this is what I love to do and this is what I pride myself on, and even though I’m injured, I play through it because that is the essence of being an athlete and pushing your body to new limits and be a part of a something bigger than yourself, your high school, or even or sport. I love being an athlete and even when I retire from sports, I’ll still be an athlete at heart. I can’t explain how much these two sports have impacted my life so for now, I will leave this here.

Dear Mom,
Thank you for everything you’ve done for me this year. Between the craziness of this last year you’ve been my rock. Always there to support me and stand by me no matter what. From helping me prepare for elections, to wishing good luck on my first day of work, you’ve always been there. You try so hard to make it to all the events and games I have going on and you always stay positive when I don't do too well. You have my back in every argument and support me endlessly. I couldn’t have asked for a better mom and a better role model in my life. Thank you for putting up with Dad and being the buffer between hailey and I and him, you balance out this family and keep everything in check. Thank you for taking care of Freya while I’m gone and being the only person who actually cares for her when I’m not there. I’m not sure how you do everything you do without being checked into an insane asylum. The government needs to run some serious tests on you because anyone else I know would crumple under even 1/10 of the pressure that’s put on you. You are the reason I am who I am today. You raised me to be a strong, independent leader and I know I can be a handful sometimes and be in a bad mood every now and then but you always remind me to stay positive, keep my head up, and just keep moving forward.

Dear Incoming Sophomore Class President (Kylee Brown),
I know your first year as class president might sound intimidating but honestly it’s just a little more responsibility than what you’re doing currently. This is the year when class really starts to bond and take notice of things going around at the high school now that they have their first year over and done with. The best advice I can give you is to really involve your class in activities as much as you can. Whether it’s homecoming or WinterFest or even just t-shirt designs, get your class involved and ask for what they would like to see. Everyone always appreciates being asked their opinion on things they might be involved in. Besides that, keep an eye on your officers and really make sure they’re focussed and doing their job, it’s easy to slack off and it’s your responsibility to make sure they don’t. Whenever you guys have a conflict or something isn’t getting done right (trust me it’ll happen) just remember to keep an open mind and approach the situation calmly. No one likes getting yelled at or told what to do so you have to be able to resolve conflicts without getting emotions high. Always remember communication is key, you’re in charge of making sure your class activities run smoothly and if they don’t (even if it’s not your fault) Morty will ride your ass about it :) (love you Morty). One last thing to keep in mind is that by taking this leadership role and being president of your class, you go down with the ship, you take the blame if something goes wrong and don’t take credit but instead give credit to those who helped you. It’s kinda rigged but hey that’s leadership for ya. Other than that, just take the year one event at a time and always remember to plan ahead and GET PO IN EARLY. If there’s one thing to take from this it’s to also turn the PO in ASAP. You’re gonna do great and good luck!!

Portfolio Page 19 - The Professional
Out of all of the professional assignments given to us this year, my two favorite would be the first and the last, picking a job to study and the mock interview. Starting with picking a career, it always seems difficult but I learn something new each year. I have no clue what I want to do in my life so exploring and researching different fields is always exciting to me. I can picture myself in different careers and get a deeper understanding of what it would be like. This assignment has us research different fields we are interested in and pick one to study for the school year. This year I was really excited to pick criminal psychology and dive deeper into the mind of a criminal. Our final professional assignment is the mock interview, we research and study a career and by the end of the year we are interviewed by someone in the same field or somewhat of the same field. Unfortunately, this year my professional did not show up to either zoom meeting interviews but I still loved getting prepared and studying for the interview. I hope next year I have better luck with my profession but I’m sure I will enjoy the process just the same.
Portfolio Page 20 - Change
With all the craziness going on with COVID and all, I’d say this was a pretty great year for the Sophomore class, not financially of course. We really bonded this year and I was very lucky to get to work with the group of people that I did. We worked well together with only a few minor bumps in the road that quickly got resolved. One “bump” was not everyone pulling their weight. There were a few times someone didn’t do their job on time or properly which can be very frustrating at times. A simple talk and agreement fixed everything and since then I haven’t had any struggles with the Sophomore class or Leadership class for that. A positive change I would offer the incoming Sophomores is to stay kind. Yes, I know you hear it all the time but honestly you never know what someone is going through. You never know the type of day they had, or their home situation, or any internal struggles going on so it’s always best to approach situations carefully. It’s easy to get lost in your own world and worries and problems and to take it out on someone else, but that’s where you have to catch yourself and calm down. There have been a few points this year where that mindset has really come in handy when dealing with situations. Always remember to count the things you’re grateful for, because even when it feels like the entire world is against you, you always have something to be grateful for and something positive to find. I feel like this mindset works wonders in leadership with the amount of stress and pressure put on us. We face criticism from our classes everyday because at the end of the day you can’t make everyone happy. As long as you keep your head up and stay positive you’ll be just fine.
Portfolio Page 21 - The Ideal Leader
An ideal later is someone who is willing to sacrifice themselves for the betterment of the group. One who does just as much work as everyone else and equally shares the work, sometimes taking the brunt of it. A leader is someone who is able to take the blame when something goes wrong and doesn’t take credit when things go right but rather shares credit among the group. This person is responsible, professional and calm. This course and RHS isn’t easy with everything else in our schedules. I know playing 2 sports, working, and going to school is pressure and then adding the leadership course on top of that adds more pressure. Still, a student in this program understands the sacrifices that need to be made and respects deadlines and due dates. Mistakes are allowed to be made but laziness and lack of motivation is unacceptable. It is one thing to turn in an assignment a few hours late but it’s another when a student starts abandoning their job. In order to be a leader at RHS, you have to be the calm face in the mess of chaos. People will be looking for that one person who is calm and collected and in order to be a good leader you have to put on that face even if you’re stressed as well. During daily class activities a student leader should be able to work on a project while also bonding and making memories with their team, you can’t be a good leader if you don’t know the people you’re leading. Time management is huge when it comes to leadership which means homework and events should be planned and completed in a timely manner. Courage, confidence, integrity, and honesty are all things required to be a great leader in this program. There is no room for laziness, negativity, and carelessness.
Growing.
